AI agents for business: what they are, types and how to deploy them

BY TECNOCIM INNOVA   PUBLISHED ON 17 MAY 2026

Gartner forecasts that 40% of enterprise applications will incorporate task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025 (Gartner, August 2025). The global AI agent market will grow from 7.6 billion US dollars in 2025 to 47.1 billion in 2030, at an annual growth rate of 45.8% (Grand View Research, 2025). In Spain, 81% of organisations are already investing in these technologies according to KPMG (April 2026).

AI agents are not chatbots under a new name. They are a new category of software that can transform every department in your company — and the cost of implementing them can be deducted as an R&D&I project.

What AI agents are and how they differ from chatbots

An AI agent is a program that perceives its environment, reasons over the information available, takes decisions and executes actions autonomously, without constant human intervention (IBM, 2026). The difference from a chatbot is fundamental:

FeatureTraditional chatbotAI agent
LogicPredefined scripts, decision treesContextual reasoning, autonomous planning
CapabilityAnswers frequently asked questionsExecutes complex tasks across multiple systems
IntegrationSingle channel (web, WhatsApp)Connects CRM, ERP, email, databases
LearningStatic, needs reprogrammingAdapts with every interaction
AnalogyVending machine: you press a button, you get the same thingPersonal chef: understands the context and adapts the response

Nor are they RPA (robotic process automation). Where an RPA bot follows fixed "if X then Y" rules, an AI agent reasons about the context and decides what to do in situations nobody planned for (Hiberus Booster, 2026).

The main types of intelligent AI agents are reactive agents (they respond to stimuli), goal-based agents (they plan in order to reach an objective), model-based agents (they hold an internal model of their environment) and multi-agent systems, where several agents work together on complex tasks.

What can AI agents do in each department of your company?

The versatility of AI agents is their greatest strength. These are the most proven applications by department:

Sales

Sales teams with AI agents spend up to 3 times more of their day on commercial conversations than on administrative tasks (Gray Group International, 2026).

Customer service

Gartner forecasts that by 2029 AI agents will autonomously resolve 80% of routine customer service incidents.

What these companies have in common: they started with one specific use case in one department, measured the results and scaled up. It was not a mass transformation programme but a controlled pilot.

Is your company already investing in AI technology? Check how much you can recover with our tax savings calculator — R&D&I tax deductions apply to AI agent projects.

What AI agents cost to deploy and how to recover up to 59%

The cost varies with the complexity of the project:

ScenarioInvestmentIncludes
Agent on a SaaS platform€5,000–€20,000 per yearAgentforce/Copilot licences + configuration
Bespoke agent€20,000–€80,000Custom development + CRM/ERP integration
Multi-agent system€80,000–€250,000Full architecture + orchestration + training

R&D&I tax deductions under Article 35 LIS

If your company builds AI agents with proprietary algorithms, fine-tuned language models or multi-agent orchestration systems, the project can be classified as R&D under article 35.1 of the Spanish corporate income tax act (Impuesto sobre Sociedades):

If the project consists of deploying existing commercial agents (Agentforce, Copilot Studio) to improve processes, it is classified as Technological Innovation, with a 12% deduction (Article 35.2 LIS). A €50,000 project generates €6,000 of direct deduction.

Source: the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT), Article 35 LIS. The Audiencia Nacional (Spain's National Court) has confirmed that AI projects can qualify, provided the technological novelty is documented in a binding technical report (informe motivado vinculante).

FUNDAE-funded training

The European AI Act (Article 4) has required since February 2025 that companies ensure the AI literacy of their staff. Training in AI agents — prompt engineering, platform configuration, governance — can be funded through FUNDAE: 100% of the training credit for companies with 1 to 9 employees and 75% for companies with 10 to 49 (FUNDAE, 2026).

Do you want to deploy AI agents and recover the investment? Tecnocim Innova helps you with AI consultancy, with managing your R&D&I tax deductions and with FUNDAE-funded training for your team. All under a single engagement.

How to start: a 4-step roadmap

  1. Identify: select 1–2 processes with a high volume of repetitive tasks and structured data. Sales and customer service are the most common entry points.
  2. Pilot: run one agent in one department for 4–8 weeks. Measure time saved, errors avoided and team satisfaction.
  3. Scale: with ROI data from the pilot, extend to other departments. Document the project as R&D&I for the tax deductions.
  4. Train: upskill your team with FUNDAE-funded AI training. Meet the AI Act literacy obligation and maximise adoption.

According to BCG, executives are allocating more than 30% of their AI budgets specifically to agentic capabilities in 2026. The time to start is now: competitive advantage favours those who move first.

Next step

AI agents mark the shift from AI as an assistive tool to AI as an autonomous workforce. With a market growing at 45.8% a year, 8 leading Spanish companies already deploying them and a tax framework that recovers up to 59% of the investment, the question is not whether your company needs AI agents — but when to start.

At Tecnocim Innova we combine practical AI training, implementation consultancy and management of R&D&I tax deductions so that your AI agent project pays for itself from year one. We help you with generative AI and with the agents that take it to the next level. If you are still deciding which technology to choose, read our comparison of the best AI tools of 2026.
