Digital transformation for companies: steps and grants 2026
40% of Spanish SMEs have still not started their digital transformation (ESIC, 2025). Those that have, though, report solid results: 97% improve productivity (Unisys, 2026) and they are 50% more likely to export. With more than 3,300 million euros already distributed through the Spanish Kit Digital scheme and new calls opening in 2026, the grants to digitise your company have never been easier to reach.
This guide reviews the current state of digitalisation in Spain, the grants available, the key steps in the process and a worked example of how to combine programmes.
Digital transformation for companies: where Spain stands today
Digitalisation among companies in Spain is advancing, but at an uneven pace. According to the INE ICT survey (Q1 2025), 21.1% of companies with 10 or more employees already use artificial intelligence, a jump of 8.7 percentage points on the previous year. Paid cloud computing is used by 44.3% and 84.5% have a website.
The Digital Pulse report by Excelia (2025), however, finds that 54.5% of Spanish companies remain at a medium-low level of digital maturity. Some 70.5% acknowledge that advanced digitalisation is key to competing, but the barriers persist: 45% of SMEs cite a lack of technical knowledge and another 45% point to financial constraints as the main obstacle (ESIC, 2025).
The digital transformation market in Spain reached 48,960 million US dollars in 2026, with annual growth of 17.63% forecast through to 2031 (Mordor Intelligence, 2025). Digitalisation already accounts for between 21% and 28% of national GDP (Advice Strategic Consultants, 2025), and Spain ranks 7th for digitalisation within the EU27.
Why digitise your company? Real return data
The data shows that digital transformation for companies is not a passing fashion but a matter of competitive survival:
- 97% of Spanish companies that have transformed their digital workplace report productivity gains (Unisys, 2026)
- 72% of those that have adopted AI say it has increased their revenue (SMiLE/PwC, 2025)
- Digitalised SMEs are 50% more likely to export (ESIC, 2025)
- 65% report more efficient operations after digitising their processes (ESIC, 2025)
- Digitalising the supply chain can cut operating costs by up to 30% (ESIC, 2025)
- 80% of SMEs that invest in digital training see productivity gains (ESIC, 2025)
AI adoption still shows a wide gap by company size, though: while 44% of large companies already use it, only 8.6% of small companies and 7% of microbusinesses have taken the step (INE, 2025).

Key steps to digitalising a company
Digital transformation in a company is not about buying technology: it is a strategic process. These are the five fundamental steps:
1. Digital maturity assessment
Assess where your company stands: current systems, manual processes, the digital skills of your team, technology infrastructure. This step can be funded through Kit Consulting.
2. Digital transformation plan
Set measurable objectives, prioritise the areas with the greatest impact and agree a realistic timetable. A good plan covers estimated investment, expected ROI, the training needed and the grants that apply to each phase.
3. Rolling out solutions
Execute the plan in phases, starting with the areas of highest return. The most common solutions are a management ERP, CRM, e-commerce, process automation, cybersecurity and collaboration tools.
4. Training the team
65% of Spanish professionals rate the level of digital training in their company as medium-low (Digital Pulse, 2025). Training is the step most companies skip, and the one with the greatest impact: 80% of those that invest in digital skills see productivity gains. See our AI training for companies.
5. Measurement and continuous improvement
Define KPIs before you roll anything out and measure results every quarter. Digital transformation is not a project with an end date: it is an iterative process of continuous improvement.
Digital transformation by sector
Digitalisation is advancing unevenly from one sector to the next, and the grants adapt accordingly:
Tourism and hospitality
Digitalisation among tourism SMEs grew by 50% in a single year, reaching 47.6% adoption (SETUR/Plan de Recuperación, 2024). Kit Digital covers sector-specific solutions such as booking engines, channel managers and online review management. For a closer look at the sector, see our article on digital transformation in the hotel sector.
Manufacturing
Industrial companies can apply to the ACCIÓ Inversiones Productivas programmes (up to 500,000 EUR) to modernise production lines, deploy IoT or automate processes. Combining them with R&D&I tax deductions (art. 35 LIS, the Spanish corporate income tax act) can cover up to 59% of the investment.
Agri-food
The Spanish government has earmarked 193 million euros specifically for digitalisation in the agri-food sector (España Digital, 2025). Catalunya offers agri-food transformation programmes through ACCIÓ with intensity of up to 40% and a maximum of 500,000 EUR per beneficiary.
Worked example: a roadmap with combined grants
A Catalan industrial SME with 30 employees needs to roll out an ERP, digitise its supply chain and train its team in digital tools. Total estimated investment: 80,000 EUR.
| Phase | Applicable grant | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Digital assessment | Kit Consulting (Seg A) | 12,000 EUR |
| ERP and e-commerce rollout | Kit Digital (Seg I) | 12,000 EUR |
| Production line modernisation | ACCIÓ Innovación Tecnológica (40%) | Up to 32,000 EUR |
| Sustainability consultancy | ACCIÓ Cupons Green | 8,000 EUR |
| Total combined grants | Up to 64,000 EUR |
In other words, this company could cover up to 80% of its investment in digital transformation by combining compatible grants. The key is to apply for each programme at the right moment and with the right paperwork.
Next step
Digital transformation for companies is no longer optional: those that digitise improve productivity, export more and cut costs. With Kit Digital, Kit Consulting, the ACCIÓ programmes and R&D&I tax deductions, the grants are there to make the investment viable for companies operating in Spain.
