Digital transformation consultancy: what it is and how it helps your company
According to figures from the Spanish government (June 2025), more than 700,000 companies have received support to digitise through public programmes such as Kit Digital, Kit Consulting and GeneraciónD Pymes, with investment of more than 3,000 million euros. Even so, almost one in four SMEs still falls short of a basic level of digital intensity. A digital transformation consultancy is the first step towards closing that gap.
What is a digital transformation consultancy?
A digital transformation consultancy is a professional service that analyses a company's technological and organisational position, identifies opportunities for improvement and designs an action plan to build digital technologies into its business processes.
Unlike rolling out a single tool (an ERP, a CRM or a cybersecurity solution), consultancy tackles the transformation as a whole. It works on three pillars:
- People: training, change management and digital culture
- Processes: automation, removing inefficiencies and operational redesign
- Technology: choosing and rolling out the right solutions for each case
The output is a Digital Transformation Plan (PTD) that sets priorities, deadlines, the investment needed and the expected return on each action.
Why hire a digital transformation consultancy?
Companies that try to digitise without a clear strategy usually run into three problems: they invest in technology that does not fit their processes, they fail to get their teams to adopt the new tools, and they end up with half-finished projects that deliver nothing.
A specialist consultancy brings:
- An objective outside view: it spots blind spots that are invisible from inside the organisation
- Sector experience: it knows which solutions work in companies of a similar profile
- A realistic roadmap: it prioritises actions by impact and feasibility, avoiding scattergun effort
- Access to grants: it identifies public programmes that cover the investment in full or in part
- Change management: it supports people through the transition, reducing resistance
According to the State of the Digital Decade 2025 report, Spain leads digitalisation in Europe, with 66.18% of the population holding basic digital skills (against an EU average of 55.56%). That progress reaches the business fabric too, but many SMEs need professional support to make the leap.
The 5 phases of a digital transformation consultancy
| Phase | What it includes | Indicative duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Assessment | Analysis of processes, technology, people and digital maturity | 2–3 weeks |
| 2. Strategy definition | Objectives, KPIs, priorities and budget | 1–2 weeks |
| 3. Transformation Plan | Roadmap with actions, deadlines and owners | 1–2 weeks |
| 4. Rollout | Execution of the plan with technical support | 3–12 months |
| 5. Follow-up | Measuring results, adjustments and continuous improvement | Ongoing |
In the assessment phase, tools such as the HADA digital maturity test (used in the Activa Industria 4.0 programme run by the Spanish Ministerio de Industria) make it possible to measure the starting point in a structured way.
Grants for digital transformation consultancy
One advantage of hiring digital consultancy in Spain is that public programmes exist which cover up to 100% of the cost. The main ones are:
Kit Consulting
A programme from the Spanish Ministerio de Transformación Digital with a budget of 300 million euros (NextGenerationEU funds). It offers digital advice vouchers for SMEs with 10 to 249 employees.
- SMEs with 10 to 49 employees: up to €12,000
- SMEs with 50 to 99 employees: up to €18,000
- SMEs with 100 to 249 employees: up to €24,000
The services cover areas such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, digital sales, business processes and digital strategy. More on Kit Consulting.
Activa Industria 4.0
A Ministerio de Industria programme run by the EOI that provides 50 hours of specialist consultancy on industrial digitalisation. The service, valued at €9,790, is funded at almost 100%: the company pays only €320.
The programme includes a digital assessment with the HADA tool, preparation of the Digital Transformation Plan and tailored advice. Total funding of 101 million euros to support 11,000 SMEs. Read our guide to Activa Industria 4.0.
Other compatible grants
- Kit Digital: to roll out the technology solutions recommended in the consultancy (see the guide)
- ACCIÓ vouchers: in Catalunya, ACCIÓ offers vouchers for innovation and digital transformation consultancy (more detail)
- Regional grants: every autonomous community has its own programmes. Check our grants search tool to find the ones available in your region
How do you choose a digital transformation consultancy?
Not every consultancy offers the same value. These criteria will help you choose:
- Experience in your sector: look for firms that have worked with companies of a similar size and sector to yours
- A clear methodology: they should explain how they work, what deliverables you will receive and on what timescale
- A multidisciplinary team: digital transformation is not only technology; it needs business, change management and technology profiles
- Knowledge of grants: a good consultancy identifies the applicable grants and handles the paperwork with you
- Support during rollout: a plan is worth nothing if nobody executes it. Make sure the consultancy stays with you through implementation, not just the assessment

Key areas of digital transformation in companies
Depending on the starting point and the sector, a digital transformation consultancy can address several areas:
- Process automation: removing repetitive manual tasks, cutting errors and freeing up the team's time
- Data management: centralising information, building dashboards and taking decisions based on data
- Digital sales: CRM, marketing automation, e-commerce and digital sales channels
- Cybersecurity: protecting company information with measures suited to its size and risk
- Artificial intelligence: applying AI to production processes, customer service or predictive analysis
- ERP and integrated management: bringing every area of the company onto a single platform
The digital transformation market in Spain reaches 48,960 million US dollars in 2026, according to El Grupo Informático. That growth reflects how digitalisation has stopped being an option and become a competitive necessity.
Next step: plan your digital transformation
A digital transformation consultancy turns the complexity of digitalisation into a clear, funded and executable plan. With programmes such as Kit Consulting (up to €24,000) and Activa Industria 4.0 (50 hours of subsidised consultancy), professional advice has never been more within reach for companies operating in Spain.
