Generative AI for business: a complete implementation and funding guide
On 2 August 2026 the European AI Act obligations for high-risk systems take effect, with fines of up to €35 million (EU Regulation 2024/1689). At the same time, Spanish tax law allows companies to deduct between 12% and 42% of their Impuesto sobre Sociedades (Spanish corporate income tax) liability for artificial intelligence projects. Generative AI is no longer a trend: it is a strategic decision with legal and tax implications that every SME needs to assess.
This guide gives you what no other resource puts together: a practical implementation roadmap alongside the full funding playbook, so your company can adopt generative AI with the highest return and the lowest risk.
What generative AI is and why it is reshaping business in 2026
Generative artificial intelligence is a type of AI that can create new content — text, images, code, structured data — from instructions written in natural language. Unlike traditional AI, which classifies or predicts, generative AI produces original output adapted to the context.
The tools that matter most to companies include (you can go deeper in our comparison of the best AI tools of 2026):
| Tool | Provider | Main strength | Enterprise price per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Enterprise | OpenAI | Text, analysis, code | From 25 USD per user |
| Microsoft Copilot 365 | Microsoft | Office 365 integration | From 30 USD per user |
| Gemini for Workspace | Google suite, multimodal | From 20 USD per user | |
| Claude for Work | Anthropic | Long documents, analysis | From 25 USD per user |
Spain ranks fifth in the EU for the uptake of generative AI in business: 50% of companies already use it in their day-to-day operations, ahead of the United States on 36% and above the European average of 37% (European Investment Bank, 2025). On top of that, 85% of Spanish companies have already invested or plan to invest in AI, according to KPMG (Perspectivas España 2025).
The difference from two years ago is that these tools now sit natively inside existing workflows: email, spreadsheets, CRM and ERP. They need no infrastructure of your own and no dedicated data team.
For an industrial SME with 50 employees, deploying generative AI no longer means an 18-month digital transformation programme. You can start with 4-week pilots in one specific department and scale up gradually.
Do you want to train your team in generative AI? Tecnocim Innova offers AI training programmes tailored to each department, with FUNDAE funding included.
5 generative AI applications for SMEs: from marketing to operations
Generative AI is not a single tool: it is a productivity layer that applies right across the business. These are the five areas where Spanish SMEs are getting measurable results.

According to Deloitte's "State of AI in the Enterprise 2026" report, 59% of Spanish companies are already training their employees in AI tools. There is a paradox, though: while large companies move fast, only 2.9% of industrial SMEs use AI actively, with Catalonia on 3.7% — behind Madrid on 4.2% (IndesIA, 2025 Barometer). The question is not whether to adopt generative AI, but when and with what strategy.

What does generative AI cost to deploy, and how do you fund it?
The cost of adoption varies with scope. An SME can start with licences for commercial tools (from €20–€30 per user per month) and move towards bespoke development once it has identified use cases with proven ROI.
Typical investment ranges by company size:
| Scenario | Annual investment | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic adoption (10–25 users) | €3,000–€9,000 | ChatGPT/Copilot licences + in-house training |
| Departmental rollout | €15,000–€50,000 | Licences + CRM/ERP integration + consultancy |
| Bespoke AI project | €50,000–€200,000 | Proprietary model development, RAG, automations |
The good news: there is a complete ecosystem of Spanish public grants that can cut these costs by between 40% and 100%.
Grants and support schemes open in 2026
- CDTI: a budget of €1,817 million for 2026 (Zabala, 2026), with dedicated lines for R&D projects in artificial intelligence. Partially repayable funding of up to 75% of the project, of which 33% is non-repayable.
- Kit Consulting: a Spanish Recovery Plan programme with a budget of €300 million (Red.es). It covers AI advisory services for SMEs with up to 250 employees, in amounts from €12,000 to €24,000 depending on the band. A new 2026 call is pending.
- €40 million for AI in SMEs: a programme announced in March 2026 by the Spanish Secretariat of State for Digitalisation and AI, managed by Red.es. It will fund 30 use cases and 15 reusable models.
- FUNDAE training: all generative AI training can be funded through FUNDAE under the Spanish planned-training system. Companies with 1 to 9 employees recover 100% of their training credit; those with 10 to 49 recover 75% (FUNDAE, 2026).
Grants specific to Catalonia
- Catalunya IA 2030: a strategic plan worth €1 billion over 5 years to drive artificial intelligence forward, including €8 million of direct support for SMEs (Generalitat de Catalunya, 2025).
- ACCIÓ IA Ètica per a PIMEs: a €6 million programme (€2.1M a year to 2028) for AI maturity assessments, system testing and legal advice on AI Act compliance (Govern.cat, 2025).

Tax deductions for AI projects: Article 35 LIS
This is a competitive advantage that many SMEs still leave on the table. Article 35 of the Spanish corporate income tax act (Ley del Impuesto sobre Sociedades) lets you deduct a significant share of your investment in artificial intelligence projects straight from your tax bill.
The key is how the project is classified:
| Type | Deduction | When it applies to AI projects |
|---|---|---|
| R&D (Art. 35.1) | 25% base, 42% on the amount above the average of the previous 2 years | Developing original AI algorithms or models, applied research |
| R&D — research staff | +17% additional | Employees working exclusively on the R&D project |
| Technological Innovation (Art. 35.2) | 12% | Deploying existing AI tools to improve processes |
Source: the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT), 2024 IRPF manual, Article 35 LIS.
A worked example: an industrial SME invests €100,000 in developing an AI-based predictive maintenance system. If the project is classified as R&D and the spend exceeds the average of the previous two years, the deduction can reach €42,000 in Impuesto sobre Sociedades. If it also assigns research staff full time, it adds a further 17% on those staff costs.
For more modest projects — deploying ChatGPT Enterprise and integrating AI into the CRM, for example — the 12% technological innovation deduction is still worth having. A €30,000 project generates €3,600 of direct deduction.
Our advice is to obtain a binding technical report (Informe Motivado Vinculante, IMV) from the Spanish ministry to lock down the project's classification before you apply the deduction. Tecnocim Innova handles the whole process.

AI Act 2026: obligations for companies that use generative AI
The European Artificial Intelligence Regulation (EU 2024/1689) is already in force and its obligations apply in phases:
| Date | What comes into force |
|---|---|
| 2 February 2025 | AI prohibitions + the AI literacy obligation (Art. 4) |
| 2 August 2025 | Rules for general-purpose AI models (GPAI) |
| 2 August 2026 | Obligations for high-risk systems + transparency |
| 2 August 2027 | Requirements for regulated products with embedded AI |
For an SME that uses generative AI, the most relevant obligations from August 2026 are these:
- Transparency (Art. 50): you must tell users when they are interacting with an AI system and label the synthetic content that AI generates.
- AI literacy (Art. 4): in force since February 2025. Companies must make sure their staff have the training they need to use AI systems responsibly.
- Risk classification: if your company develops AI systems for employment decisions, credit assessment or access to essential services, those systems may be classified as high risk, with additional requirements.
Fines for non-compliance reach €35 million or 7% of global turnover for prohibited practices, €15 million or 3% for high-risk breaches, and €7.5 million or 1.5% for transparency infringements.
The AI literacy obligation (Art. 4) turns AI training for business into a legal requirement, not just a competitive advantage. Training programmes such as the ones Tecnocim Innova runs cover this obligation and can also be funded through FUNDAE.
Next step: from idea to ROI with expert support
Generative AI offers an unusual combination: a high-impact technology backed by a complete ecosystem of Spanish public incentives to fund its adoption. Tax deductions of up to 42%, CDTI grants, training funded through FUNDAE and specific programmes such as the Catalunya IA 2030 plan all reduce the financial risk of the investment.
Now is the moment to act: the European AI Act obligations keep advancing, the 2026 calls are open and competitive advantage favours those who move first.
At Tecnocim Innova we combine more than 30 years of experience in tax incentives with practical AI training for companies. We help you identify the use cases with the highest ROI, fund the project with the grants available and meet the rules in force.
