B Corp certification: what it is, requirements and benefits
334 Spanish companies are already B Corps, and together they turn over more than €16 billion (B Corp Spain, 2026). The movement grows by 18% a year in Spain, with Catalunya leading the way and holding 43% of the certifications. But what does earning this mark really involve, and how can it benefit your company?
B Corp certification shows that a company meets the most demanding standards of social, environmental and governance performance. It is not simply a logo: it is a rigorous verification process that looks at how your company treats its workers, its impact on the community, its environmental management and the transparency of its corporate governance.
What is B Corp certification and why do 334 Spanish companies already hold it?
B Corp certification is awarded by B Lab, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2006 in the United States. In Spain, the Fundación B Lab Spain has coordinated the movement since 2015, from its base in Barcelona.
To be certified, your company has to pass the B Impact Assessment (BIA), a questionnaire of roughly 200 questions covering five pillars:
- Governance: transparency, ethics and decision-making structure
- Workers: pay, benefits, training and wellbeing at work
- Community: impact on suppliers, diversity and inclusion, social action
- Environment: emissions, energy use, waste management, circular economy
- Customers: the value of the product or service to the end user
The minimum score for certification is 80 points out of 200. The median for conventional companies that take the assessment is around 50 points, which gives an idea of how demanding it is.
The mark is not permanent: it has to be renewed every three years through a full new assessment. Companies such as Danone, Ecoalf, Veritas, Holaluz and Triodos Bank are already part of the B Corp community in Spain.

Requirements for B Corp certification
The certification process has three core requirements:
1. Performance requirement
Complete the B Impact Assessment and obtain a verified score above 80 points. It is sensible to work internally until you are past 85 points, because losing a few during the audit is common.
2. Legal requirement
Since Ley 18/2022 on the creation and growth of companies (the Spanish Crea y Crece act), Spain recognises the figure of the Sociedad de Beneficio e Interés Común (SBIC), the common benefit company. Companies that certify have to amend their articles of association to include a commitment to consider every stakeholder group — workers, customers, suppliers, community and environment — in their decision-making.
3. Transparency requirement
Your verified score is published in the global B Corp directory. Anyone can look up how your company scores in each impact area.
Steps in the process
- Register on the B Lab platform and complete the BIA self-assessment
- Submit the application with supporting documentation
- Pass the verification audit (review of the evidence)
- Amend the articles of association (the SBIC requirement)
- Sign the certification agreement and pay the fee
The full process takes between 8 and 12 months, depending on the size of the company and the internal improvements it needs to make.
How much does B Corp certification cost?
The cost depends on annual turnover. There are two elements: the annual certification fee and the cost of the verification audit.
| Annual turnover | Annual fee | Audit (one-off) |
|---|---|---|
| Under €1M | ~€1,000 | €3,000 – €5,000 |
| €1 – €5M | €2,000 – €6,000 | €5,000 – €10,000 |
| €5 – €50M | €6,000 – €15,000 | €10,000 – €15,000 |
| Over €50M | €15,000 – €25,000 | ~€20,000 |
For an SME turning over between €1 and €5 million, the initial outlay is around €8,000 – €16,000, taking in the audit and the first year's fee. From the second year on, only the annual fee is due.
There are no grants aimed specifically at B Corp certification, but the preparation work brings improvements in energy efficiency, waste management and employment policy that can be funded through existing grant programmes.
The benefits of being a B Corp in Spain
Figures from the B Corp movement in Europe back up concrete benefits:
Financial resilience
Between 2019 and 2022, 76% of European B Corps increased their revenue, against 60% of conventional companies (B Corp Spain, 2024). The survival rate is higher too: 96.7% of B Corps are still trading, against 91.5% of conventional companies.
Attracting talent
57% of Spanish B Corps have gender parity in leadership roles (B Corp Spain, 2026). In a labour market where professionals favour companies with a purpose, the B Corp mark becomes an advantage when hiring and keeping qualified people.
An edge in public tenders
Spanish public authorities are building sustainability criteria into procurement more and more. Madrid and Barcelona already award points for environmental certifications in their tender documents. Holding B Corp certification evidences an ESG commitment in a way that can be checked.
Access to sustainable finance
Banks and investors apply ever tighter ESG filters. A B Corp profile improves access to sustainable finance lines and to impact investment funds.
Getting ready for regulation
82% of Spanish B Corps already measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions (B Corp Spain, 2026). That puts them ahead on the CSRD directive, which will require sustainability reports from a growing number of European companies. Preparing for B Corp is, in practice, getting ahead of the rules.

New 2026 B Corp standards: what changes with version V2.1
Since February 2026, B Lab has been rolling out the V2.1 standards, the most ambitious update in the movement's 20-year history. Development took four years and drew on more than 26,000 comments from 67 countries.
The most significant change: the cumulative scoring system (80 points distributed freely) is dropped and mandatory requirements across seven impact topics are introduced:
- Purpose and stakeholder governance
- Fair work and quality employment
- Justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI)
- Human rights in operations and the supply chain
- Climate action with a plan aligned to 1.5°C
- Environmental stewardship and circularity
- Government affairs and collective action
Scoring high in some areas to make up for others is no longer enough. Each topic has a mandatory minimum level with improvement milestones at 3 and 5 years.
Verification will also be carried out by an accredited independent third party, which strengthens the credibility of the mark against less rigorous certifications.
The new standards are aligned with international frameworks such as the European CSRD, the GRI Standards and the Science Based Targets (SBTi), making it easier for companies to fit their B Corp management together with the sustainability reporting that European rules demand step by step.
